The hidden impact of fly droppings on your lighting

Flies in homes, shops, or hospitality venues are annoying, but did you know their droppings can also cause damage to lighting?

The small black spots you sometimes see on fixtures may seem harmless. However, over time they can affect paint layers, varnishes, and protective coatings. Especially with designer lighting and fixtures with a high-quality finish, these stains can leave permanent marks.

Why can fly droppings cause damage?

Fly droppings contain substances that can gradually affect surfaces over time. If they are not removed promptly, they can damage the protective layer of a fixture. This may lead to:

  • dull spots

  • discoloration

  • damaged paint or varnish layers

  • permanent stains

  • deterioration of protective coatings

On dark, matte, or high-gloss finishes, this type of damage is often even more noticeable.

Which materials are most sensitive?

Lacquered wood

With wooden fixtures, stains can penetrate the varnish, causing matte spots or discoloration to develop.

Lacquered metals

With metal fixtures, coatings can be damaged. Once the protective layer is compromised, the surface may become more susceptible to corrosion over time.

Plastics and textiles

Plastics can become dull or discolored, while stains on fabric lampshades often penetrate deep into the fibers and are difficult to remove completely.

How do you safely remove fly droppings?

The faster you act, the lower the risk of permanent damage.

  • Turn off the light and let it cool down.

  • Use a soft microfiber cloth.

  • Gently clean with lukewarm water and a mild cleaning agent.

  • Dry the surface immediately afterwards.

Avoid aggressive products such as abrasives, steel wool, acetone, or strong degreasers. These can damage the finish of a fixture.

Prevention remains the best solution

Regular maintenance helps limit damage:

  • Remove dust and dirt in a timely manner.

  • Clean stains as quickly as possible.

  • Use maintenance products suitable for the material of the fixture.

  • Reduce the presence of flies where possible by using screens or other insect control measures.

  • Protect the appearance of your lighting.

Fly droppings may seem like a minor detail, but over time they can have a visible impact on the finish of your lighting. By cleaning fixtures regularly and maintaining them properly, they stay beautiful for longer and the quality of the finish is preserved.
